One listen to her incredibly powerful and soulful vocals combined with her prowess on the guitar and it is easy to see why Susan Tedeschi is destined for great things. Frequently compared with Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, Susan Tedeschi has taken her influences and experiences and sculpted them into a style that is her own. Susan's from-the-heart vocals, stinging guitar work and electrifying live performances have caused audiences and critics nationwide to take notice. The release of her debut CD on Tone-Cool Records will solidify Susan's position as one of the brightest new stars of 1998.
Susan Tedeschi was born in 1970 and has honed her considerable vocal talents ever since. At age five, she made her singing debut in local productions. From there, Susan Tedeschi sang in gospel choirs for two years, drawing the influence of the church into her vocal repertoire. Graduating from the Berkelee College of Music in 1991, she immersed herself in the Boston blues scene, performing locally with members of the Toni Lynn Washington Band. Susan Tedeschi then met guitarist Adrienne Hayes (since replaced by Sean Costello) at the House of Blues in Cambridge, with whom she formed the Susan Tedeschi Band in 1993 with Jim Lamond , bass, and Tom Hambridge , drums.
Since their first gig, Susan Tedeschi's career has escalated quickly. Winning the Boston Battle of the Blues Bands in 1994 led to a performance at the National Blues Talent Competition in Memphis; Susan Tedeschi placed second but many spectators (and judges) felt this was only due to exceeding the time limit. She was then named "Best R&B Act" in 1995 by Boston Magazine, nominated as "Outstanding Blues Act" at the Boston Music Awards both in 1995 and 1996, and nominated as "Best R&B Act" at the 1997 Awards.
Susan Tedeschi has recorded a Bob Marley song for Peter Simon's production of The Vineyard Sound, Volume III, which was released on June 13, 1997 on Critique Records. She also performs with Maynard Silva, Jonathan Edwards, and Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals on the album. Susan's recording of Bob Marley's song "I Know A Place" will be released as a single in Jamaica in 1997 on Marley's Tuff Gong label.
Susan Tedeschi has been entertaining every imaginable type of audience at both small venues like the House of Blues in Cambridge and BB King's Blues Club in Memphis to large festivals like Springin ' The Blues Festival in Jacksonville, Florida and the King Biscuit Festival in Helena, Arkansas. Whether seen live or heard on record, one listen to this incredibly soulful and powerful singer and dexterous guitarist makes it easy to recognize her incredible talent and to hear why Susan Tedeschi is destined in short order to be an important name in music.
